The severe storms continue to sweep across the Midwest, triggering numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings along their path. The storms are bringing hurricane-force winds, with gusts of 70-90 mph recorded across northern Illinois and a report of a 75 mph gust at Chicago O'Hare.
Throughout the late evening, multiple Tornado Warnings were issued across northern Illinois, including downtown Chicago.
Tornado Warning Issued for Chicago
The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Cook County, including downtown Chicago, around 9:15 p.m. The warned storm had a history of producing radar-indicated tornadoes as it moved through the suburbs.
As the storm advanced eastward, a tornado was sighted at Chicago O'Hare Airport, and the NWS Chicago reported power flashes at Chicago Midway Airport, possibly due to a tornado.
The SPC placed nearly 11 million people across southern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa, and northern Illinois, including Chicago, under a Level 4 out of 5 risk on its severe thunderstorm risk scale.
A broader area of the Midwest, affecting over 40 million people, was also under severe weather threat.

According to FOX 32 Chicago, several communities reported damage from the severe weather, including a roof blown off a home in Maple Park and fallen trees and large branches in Chicago. Earlier in the day, a powerful thunderstorm caused extensive damage in Joliet, south of Chicago.
Thousands were left without power after the storm, and damage was reported at the Rock and Roll Museum in Joliet, where a building’s roof was ripped off and ended up in the middle of a road.
